Vermont Currant, formerly known as St. Hilaire Family Farm, began with the vision and hard work of Joseph St. Hilaire.
Planting the original currant bushes in 2009, St. Hilaire Family Farm began marketing black currant simple syrup and vinaigrette in 2013. In addition to nurturing plants and developing quality products, Joe and his wife Kim, spent time educating the public about black currants and their history in the United States.
In 2014, with the help of Judi St. Hilaire, Joe’s sister, the farm products expanded to include a black currant jam, black currant rub, and black currant barbecue sauce. A black currant tea was also added to the product line in 2015.
Looking ahead, and recognizing the potential of black currants, Joe and Judi decided to officially join farms and in 2015 established Hell’s Gate Distillery, which will market Black Currant Spirits.
In 2016, Vermont Currant became the new business name for the black currant specialty product line. Joe and Judi continue to experiment and share the versatility of black currants and their black currant products. They hope you will join their enthusiasm for this fabulous fruit!
